Nation’s First Young Adult Book Convention, UtopYA, Adds Top-Selling Authors and Community Partners to Stellar Lineup

Nashville, TN / May 3, 2012 – UtopYA, the first convention for female, paranormal/fantasy young adult authors and the readers who love them, descends on the beautiful Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN on July 6-8, 2012.

Created by marketing veteran and owner of Social Deviants, Janet Wallace, UtopYA is the first convention of its kind. Its primary purpose is to raise the profile and awareness of women authors of the genre and connect them with the fans who love them. “I wanted to celebrate not only the rising female stars in the YA world, but give female fans young and old(er) a place where they can swoon over their favorite male characters, and champion their favorite female characters in a welcoming environment,” said Wallace. “In addition, as more aspiring female authors take on digital self-publishing, one of the central themes of this convention is education and networking for such purposes.”

UtopYA has secured participation from several high profile YA authors including keynote speaker, Myra McEntire, whose best-selling Hourglass series was recently optioned for film. In addition, Nashville-based Amanda Havard, author of The Survivors series and creator of the revolutionary Immersedition app, will appear as an expert panelist to discuss how digital and interactivity plays an ever-important role in book publishing. Fans can also expect Jessica Sorensen (Fallen Star and Darkness Falls series), Chelsea Fine (Archers of Avalon series), Tammy Blackwell (The Timberwolves series), Willow Cross (The Dark Gifts and Birthright series) and The Paranormal Plumes Society. Stay tuned for more announcements on authors, exhibitors and keynote speakers in the coming weeks.

Books from Birth, along with partner Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, serve as the Convention’s community partners. UtopYA will donate $5 from every ticket to the Organization between May 1- July 5.

UtopYA will have fan and author session tracks. So, whether attendees are aspiring or established YA paranormal/fantasy authors or just avid readers of the genre, the panels, filled with experts and authors alike, will have something for everyone. There will also be a game room, book trailer screenings, special signings and meet-and-greet opportunities.

Already home to the epic Southern Festival of Books, and known as the “Athens of the South,” Nashville is the perfect place to embrace mythology, creativity and heart. Located right off legendary Music Row, Scarritt-Bennett Center is an oasis modeled after the universities in Oxford England. A bit like Hogwarts, it’s fit with massive dining hall, dorm rooms and labyrinth.

Young adult fiction, or YA as it’s commonly known, is written for, published and marketed to teens and young adults. It’s intention was for readers somewhere between fouteen and twenty-one years old. However today, YA literature, specifically paranormal, dystopian and fantasy novels, such as Hunger Games and the Twilight saga have propelled the genre into the mainstream, garnering fans of all ages.

“Whether you’re into dystopian futures, werewolves, vampires, magi, wizards, gods and goddesses, shapeshifters, fairies, elves, angels, demons, demigods or jinn, this unconventional convention is for you,” said Wallace.
