Meet the Author: Samantha Shakespeare, Discern Saga

20120625-230238.jpgSamantha Shakespeare was born in Tennessee and lived there for the first nineteen years of her life before relocating to the Kansas City, Missouri area, where she currently resides. She is married to an amazing man that has always supported her many endeavors and has one vibrant, beautiful son that has brought love and light into her life since the day she found out she was pregnant.

Shakespeare is not a fictional writing name – she comes from a long line of Shakespeares on her mother’s side of the family. Her grandfather’s name was William Shakespeare – no relation to the English poet and playwright. Her choice for using the writing name Shakespeare came from the strong bond she formed with her grandmother, Alice Sandra Shakespeare (1918-1991).

1. What’s your idea of ‘utopia’?

My idea of “utopia” would be a store full of expensive handbags and really hot half-naked men (I mean book-hot men, because we all know they’re the hottest out there!) serving Moscato, my favorite wine, in girlie pink wine glasses, following me around to carry the MANY purses that I pick out, and it’s all free of charge, of course! That was a fun thought, but honestly, my utopia would be a place of serenity, where mankind can form bonds and strong relationships without the hatred and jealousy that has plagued our kind throughout history. If we could all come together and set aside, race, religion, creed and sexual orientation and realize that we are all in this life together, there would be nothing more beautiful than to live in a world where no one has to suffer.

2. Who influenced you to become a fabulous young adult paranormal author?

My son has Asperger’s, and I spend my time homeschooling him and strive to help him cope in the world today and realize how beautiful and special he truly is—there’s nothing more rewarding than watching your child succeed at things you once believed they might not achieve. With that said, Mommy needed a break sometimes and my escape at first was reading, but as I delved into a very vast selection of books that are available today, my mind began to wander. I used my history background and my imagination and began my journey as an author, which has been an emotional rollercoaster!

3. Paper or digital media?

About three years ago, I would’ve said paper, but I’m a digital girl now! Within seconds a new book pops up on your screen, and your reading journey begins! I also love that I can take them with me anywhere I go without lugging several books around—I have enough stuff in my purse already!

4. Do you have an “end of book” ritual (that you’re willing to share…)?

Honestly, my answer is pretty boring compared to the rest of the authors—no dancing or shaking my booty. I just sit at my desk in silence for a few minutes and mentally review everything I have just written. Then I call my mom and ramble on and on about what’s happened in the series. She listens intently, and about an hour later, when I’m finished talking, I’ve left her completely confused, and we both laugh.

5. What do you hope to get out of utopYA Con 2012?

Being from the Nashville area, it will be nice to return to my southern roots, and it will be such an honor to be a part of such an awesome event and be in the presence of such talented authors. The fan side of me might come out a little, but hey, that’s okay. I’m prepared to just enjoy the ride and cherish such a wonderful moment.
